I wonder as it seems you can never choose what someone else likes.

Good question and I would say ...... it depends ....

If what you have on the floor is horrific and takes away from the showing quality of the home ( for example. pet stained or odorous carpet .... ugly colors .... torn, ugly linoleum ) ----- if what you have makes the rooms look bad I would remove the floor covering and replace it with inexpensive, neutral or light colored floor covering.

If the floors are not too bad looking but could use an upgrade then ... an allowance could be an attractive thing for a buyer.

ANother thing is ..... wall to wall carpeting is not a draw that it used to be. It's good to hide imperfections in the floor or rooms but ...... the big draw is hardwood floors and ceramic tiles. If you house, by chance, has decent hardwood floors under the floor covering .... perhaps see what kind of condition it's in. It may be better to show them off or refinish them.

Good luck !!!

Exactly! Give an allowance. The color or style you pick may actually end up being something the buyer hates so much that it puts them off buying your house. You can haggle on the allowance, and may end up spending less than if you bought new carpet.

when flipping a house i am always in favor of spending a little to earn more. its amazing what a little amount spent on a new piece of carpet or few gallons of paint will do visually when selling. if the carpets are in poor shape or look worn then this can give a negative vibe to the rest of the house. remember your giving the impression that will sell the house not one that says "look at all the remodel this house needs". good luck

In today's very soft housing market, I would not put much money into beautifying any property that I was going to sell. Be prepared to discount the property, depending on the first offer you get.
