After you graduate with a BS in Geology, you will want to take the Geologist in Training (GIT) exam, work under the supervion of a liscensed professional geologist and then take the PG exam.

The Professional Geologist is a relatively new designation. Each state will have its own board, so you will have to comply with their rules in order to become a PG.

You can not call your self a geologist unless you are working under a PG. If you do, then your state board may take action against you.

I had a Registered Geologist (TN) get into serious trouble because he was not a GIT in the state of his practice. A complaint was filed and he had to respond to the Board and was disciplined. He ultimately moved to another state so that he could be grand-fathered into their regulations to obtain his PG certification as he could not pass the GIT exam in our state.

Most Geologists start with a B.S. degree, and usually go on to obtain a Masters.

According to College board, the average salary of a Geologist with a Bachelor's degree in geology and other related sciences averaged about $30,000-40,000 a year.
