I was offered a helicopter pilot position for the Air Force (active duty) but I have 3 young kids and a wife and I'm curious what the lifestyle is really like.

I hate to say it, but it really depends where you are stationed.

If you are stationed at Hurlbert Field, I would say maybe not. Special Ops can be gone a long time. However, PJs need training, so if you are assigned to a training squadron, you aren't going anywhere you don't want to go.

If you are stationed at Keflavik, heck yeah it's great for the family. You are SAR in the North Atlantic, and your family gets to experience a small nation of 250,000 people who for the most part are very friendly towards Americans.

If you are stationed at Osan, not so much. 1 year way from the family.

It's really no more or less as variable as a fixed wing pilot.

The first thing you should do is put down the crack pipe. The Air Force is only going to "offer" you a helo slot after you pass the first phase of pilot training. At that point in time you will find out what track you have been selected for, and then the Air Force will TELL you what you will fly. So unless you are in the Air Guard, which you said you are not, you are just blowing hot air.
And for pete's sake, go and talk to real helicopter pilots instead of asking yahoos on yahoo. Most people here couldn't give advice on how to get out of a wet paper sack.

Military life if any kind is not great on families, but remember, the benefits, the finaicial security (garrenteed bi-monthly paychecks). Keep the wife happy, and if she doesn't work (stay's home with the kids) make sure she does not get wrapped up in the "caddy wives club", that can be fatal for marriages. Keep her and the kids happy, and you'll be fine.
As far as the flying goes, it's the same in any branch. Servo's Off, Auto's, quick-stops, they all do them!
