don't !!!
(assuming you are refering to planks)
it's a pain but lift and cut the boards accordingly and replace with wbp ply 18mm
you could over board the existing planks but you would have to ensure that you are fixing into the joists- BUT whilst the planks are down you have no idea what is under them and increase the risk of going thru a pipe or cable.
you will also be making the floor higher and therefore increasing the the step up into the room and the amount you will need to take of the door.
sorry but in the long term it may make your life easier

It depends on what you mean by dodgy. If you mean the floorboards are loose and move, the tiles will crack. You need to fix the floor or replace it otherwise your work is not going to last. For a really good job, you could use a cement tile backer board under the tiles.

I found a really easy and great way to tile your floors. We just remodled our bathroom and using tiles with the grout and all that stuff was difficult and not being pros we made many mistakes. This stuff seems dummy proof plus it is the real stuff just put altogether for you and you can lay it on top of whatever you have. I say it done on a show on HGTV. here is the site http://www.edgeflooring.com/how_to_install/overview.html

Have done it, you need at least 18mm ply, on top of your existing floor boards, this thickness stops any movement, when you have tiled, and you walk on the floor. Also get flexible adhesive for sticking you tiles down. Did it 2 years ago, no problems at all

To tile a wooden floor you need to put plywood down and has to be screwed down every 6" so as no movement happens unless the tiles will come up.

Not hardboard, use plywood, not less than 6mm, screws not nails, prime finished surface, use `tile to wood` adhesive, not standard ceramic adhesive.
