It has just become the societal norm in western civilization to not eat dogs, cats, and domesticated animals of that sort. It really has nothing to do with religion. But, in reality, on a basic physical level, all animals are actually edible, including us.
In may cultures cats and dogs are eaten. During my travels throughout the world in the military, I ate cat and dog. Cat reminded me a lot of rabbit meat. Dog was somewhat like beef, but different.
I have eaten all sort of animals. I figured while in those different countries, might as well experience some of their culture. Some tasted ok, some was disgusting. But, I will always try something once.

Of course people in most countries would not eat a domesticated animal, a pet they've grown to love and consider a friend. However, if one is dying of starvation and it comes to that, it would not be a sin if one "chose" to do so. Also, there are countries where dogs are eaten. A dog is an animal...just as a pig, chicken, etc are animals. By the way, there are people who consider their pet pigs and chickens just as precious as a pet dog. It depends on the custom and traditions of where you live. Many countries and religions view people who eat cows or pigs in a negative light.

Read in context.
Ge 9:3 , 5 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. “But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man.

Every man or woman from Adam & Eve up until after the flood were all vegatarings, This is when the Human race began to eat meat, You ask can we eat dogs, In Vietnam, they do eat dogs, as I am told by my brother-in-law, In India, they will not eat a cow, So you have different customs in every country. Here in The United States anyone in their right mind will not eat a dog, We do not condem the Vietnam people if that be their custom, But to us Americans dogs is a pet to us. They become part of the family so to speak. I have 2 dogs, One inside dog, One outside dog, My inside dog jumps in bed with my wife & I & sleep with us, it is a little dog. Us Americans consider dogs to be man's best friend. We have had dogs that actually saved people's life & die in the process of doing it for their masters.

I think that each person will be challenged by different parts of the Bible. Personal conviction should never be forced as a blanket rule. We are all on the same journey toward finding the truth but should not force our experience on others. So as to dogs? Not for me.

It's a matter of personal taste (which in practice usually means cultural taste).
Brits don't like to eat horsemeat but in France, Belgium and Holland it's normal. In Laos I saw rat, pangolin, tarantulas, scorpions and snakes on display to eat. Guinea pig is a traditional favourite in Ecuador and Peru.
