Absolutely.
A world without religion would be a world without war. Think about it, Every war ever fought has had religion involved in it somehow. Even in modern times, war is about religion. In Iraq an Afghanistan, we are fighting against religious beliefs. Hell, there have been wars throughout time that have been fought only because one group thought their religion was better than everyone Else's.
Without religion, there would have been no Crusades, no Spanish Inquisition, no one for the Romans to feed to the lions, and many, many, more people would be alive(or, at least, had a chance to live their lives to the fullest)
Think about it. Religion is the cause for most, if not all, the suffering in the world today.

I think religion is our tool to get closer to God. It's not a bad thing. BUT - I do think the world would be a better place if some of the non-tolerant, closed-minded religions went away - or changed to where they were not so self righteous. It's not religion that 'causes war - but the people's attitudes about their religion being the ONLY one. It's sad.

I don't. Humans are born with a neurological predisposition to believe. Religion often channels that belief to good ends. Most universities and hospitals, for example, grew from religious foundations. Studies have indicated that participation in a religion gives people a sense of being supported and a sense of well-being.

No ... But I think the world would be better without religious fanatism!

Hundreds of scientific studies of having a religious practice revealed strong evidence of lower rates of depression compared to those without such spiritual ties. Even though one does not have to be religious to be non-materialistic, a core belief of most religions is that happiness comes from spiritual rather than material values. There is now scientific evidence that not only does materialism fail to bring happiness, but it actually makes people more miserable, causing them to feel less satisfied, more anxious, angry and prone to depression, and people who focus more on having better relations with others have significantly higher levels of psychological well-being.

Karl Marx refers to religion as "the opiate of the masses"

That said, I think a good base in math and science would greatly benifit the world. When people stop thinking and just "believe" especially when it is something from another human being, that is very dangerous. the non thinking people become tools to be used by their controllers

No. The search for spirituality would still exsist. One major aspect of the human being is the spirit. It's stuck on you like glue -on-a-shoe.
