and I want to do something special for them. What is an appropriate gift? Is just taking them out to dinner OK, or should I buy them some crappy memento like a picture frame or something? Any good ideas?

Find your favorite photo of them, or take a photo of them at dinner and then give them a picture frame from things remembered and have the date they were engaged engraved on the bottom. They will love it!!

May have an engagement party for them. Nothing huge, but friends of both in general that would be happy for them. Treat it like a surprise party, celebrating their promise to each other, with photos in general afterward that you can give your best friend as a memento.

Well, I wouldn't do "dinner". You want something special for them to remember... a memento of some kind. :-)
They are your best friends! Put yourself in their position; what would mean a lot to you?

Dinner is fine...but a picture frame with their engagment date on it would be sweet too.

Well, yes, there will be showers and wedding gifts and such, but if you want to do something now, you can give a gift of something they will like or dinner or a bottle of liquor (hehehe)

You will have lots to do in the future. you will have showers, most likely the cost of being in the wedding. She will have lots to do preparing for the wedding. Best thing to do now is let her know how happy you are for her. Let her know you will be there for her. You will be able to help her greatly just being there. She will need your help keeping her sanity planning the wedding. lol congrats...

Remember - don't go crazy. you'll still need a shower gift and probably wedding gift, too.
