For a 10.1 MP camera, the filesize should range anywhere between 4 to 5 MB on average, giving you around 200-250 pictures for a 1 GB card.

The only way you'd get 1,000 pictures (as said above) is if you set your camera to a lower resolution, which you really wouldn't want to do.
