there's a HUGE backlog. suggested time is at least a 12 week wait. if it's an emergency that you need it -- like must leave country for dying relative or something -- call your congress person's office and see if they can expedite it for you.

you can check the status online at the http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html website. Passports are issued by the State Department and not Homeland Security. There is a huge backlog now, so you will probably have to wait a minimum of 10 weeks unless you paid extra to expedite the application. 3 months is a bit long, so I would definately keep calling back everyday to see if they know anything about it. Calling the post office wont help.

Since every U.S. citizen now needs a passport to Leave the country, and more important to get back into the U.S. the lines at the passport office are large.
Yet you can pay to expidite the passport if you need it in a hurry, or otherwise you need to wait until they do their job.
You can go to this site to check on where it at and what prcess it is in:

Personally you are not calling the right place if you are not a terrorist, than call the local chamber of commerce and or the post office, also sometimes if you call back at a different time you get someone more helpful.
A squeaky wheel gets the most grease. I think that is how it is said.
