Depends, is it just onion or the whole onion family?
I'd have to disagree with regards to the use of garlic a a substitute, it's completely different and doesent serve any of the same purposes of onions.

Id suggest leeks

Leeks are a good substitute for onion, also spring onions as they are milder, but they are in the same family as the onion, but hopefully you will be fine.

here are some substitutes for an onion

bulbs - just garlic
sweet peppers
orange peppers
hot peppers

now th garlic will taste like you have an onion but really you won't and the peppers just have a little spice in them...the hot ones really ( red )

good luck!
enjoy your meal!

If it's just raw onion that affects you (whilst peeling and chopping etc), use onion puree from a tube. It's rather like tomato puree, and you can also get garlic puree. Either way, you just squirt it into the pan - as in 'Look Mum, no hands' ! ! !

In addition to Digger's response, I might also suggest shallots. Have you tried onion powder (just a thought)?

Are you allergic to all from the onion family ?.
If not you could try
Garlic
Leeks
Chives
Spring Onions
Celery.

Good Luck :-)

I find leeks are a good substitute slightly milder. They don`t make your eyes run either.
