LED is the acronym for L ight E mitting D iode. Basically it is a small device that produced light when a current flows through it. The light can be almost any color (wavelength) including infrared and ultraviolet. The infrared types have been used for many years to flash "codes" from your remote controls to their associated devices (TVs, VCRs, etc.)
Really bright ones in the visible wavelengths are now used in many lighting applications such as flashlights, and even in general household lighting. Now, they are even used in traffic lights, because they are very very efficient and last a very very long time. Although relatively expensive right now, this will change rapidly. Some day (soon, I hope) the incandescent light bulb will be considered a ridiculous way of making light, because they waste much too much energy. LEDs are 20 (or more) times more efficient. You can buy these little "lamps" at some electronics stores( for experimentation and custom uses) including www.hosfelt.com. LEDs operate on small DC currents, (about 20 mA) and small voltages. (about 2 - 4 volts) Their light output is rated in mcd. (millicandles) A rating of l000 mcd is equivalent to the light of one candle.

The LED that I'm thinking of refer to those teeny lights you find in your remote control, and some new LED flashlights and things like that.

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. They're very efficient, pumping out a lot of light from a small amount of energy, and are generally miniscule. You'll find them mostly on electronic devices.

Light Emitting Diode. It is used in optical fibres - it's a carrier frequency. But usually laser light is used instead because it's more coherent.
