The former emperor of Ethiopia. He was born in 1892. Ethiopia was over-run by the Nazis and he fled to England. England conquered Ethiopia and returned Selassie to power in 1942. In 1942, Selassie freed the slaves of his country. He was killed in 1975 when the military rebelled.

Rastafarians tried to deify him. This was puzzling to Selassie.

Haille Selassie was the ruler, king, emperor, of Ethiopia and was known as The Lion of Judah. He was involved in wars with the Italians. He was born of royal parentage in 1892. It is claimed that he was descended from king Solomon of Israel and the Queen of Sheba. He became the emperor of Ethiopia in the early 1930's and started a system of reforms to improve the standards of his subjects. In 1935 Ethiopia was invaded by Italian forces who wanted to expand the Italian empire under the leadership of IL Duce, Mussolini. The Ethiopians were not able to offer much resistance and Haille Selassie fled in exile to the United Kingdom.During WW2 British forces in the Middle East drove the Italians out of Ethiopia and in 1942 Haille was back on his throne.Haille Selassie did much to improve the lot of Africans. He was one of the first African leaders to outlaw slavery and is considered by many to be the father of Rastafarianism.Bob Marley wrote a few songs about Haille Selassie. He continued his reign until 1975 when he died in Abbis Ababa aged 83. He lives on in Rastafarian legend.

There are different groups of Rastafarians, each with its own ideas. But basically they all agree on one thing—that the late emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, that he was the King of kings and Lord of lords and the conquering “Lion that is of the tribe of Judah.”—Revelation 5:5.
Had he been however, the promise of Jesus second coming and all the blessing that were to be for mankind at that time, never materialised, did they!?

He united small kingdoms of Ethiopia and grew to alter into emperor. while he visited Jamaica he did no longer approve the way they made himself a sort of god or prophet or in spite of. As many Ethiopians (around 60% i assume) his Majesty Haile Selassie grew to become into an orthodox-christian.

(m)

Haile Selassie
Emperor
Name at birth: Tafari Makonnen

Regent to the Empress Zauditu from 1916, Ras (Prince) Tafari Makonnen succeeded her to the throne of Ethiopia in 1930, proclaiming himself Haile Selassie ("Might of the Trinity"). An autocratic ruler, he modernized Ethiopia and led the resistance against Italian invasion (1935). Selassie was exiled in 1936, but restored to power in 1941 with the assistance of the Allies in World War II. By the 1970s the region's droughts and famines had taken their toll and Selassie began to lose popular support. He was deposed in a military coup in 1974 and died while under arrest. His remains were found in 1992 beneath a toilet in the Imperial Palace, and in 2000 he was interred in the Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa.

Extra credit: Haile Selassie, who claimed to be a direct descendant of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, is the object of veneration in the religion of Rastafarianism (see also: Marcus Garvey)... Selassie was also known as "The Lion of Judah" and "King of Kings"... He travelled with a pet chihuahua named Chicheebee.

Haille Selassie was the one-time Emperor of the North African Nation of ETHIOPIA.

Born, in 1892, with the "GIVEN" name "TAFARI MAKONNEN", he was MARRIED, in 1911, he became "REGENT", of the Ethiopian Nation, in 1917, and, MANY within the Nation, STILL revere him, and refer to him, as "RAS TAFARI"! Some ALSO, refer to him, as "THE LION OF JUDAH"!

He DIED, in AUGUST, 1975!

Hope that you find at least SOME of the info, I have given, to you, USEFUL, in some way!

his name 'Hallie 'Ras Tafari' Makkonon Selassie' ethiopian dictator who promised repatriation of negro's, decendants of slaves back to Africa. At his overthrow at the end of the ethiopian civil war, he was escorted into a church at his request to pray, when soldiers entered the church to imprison him, he had disappeared. Obviously your asking in this section to find out why Rastafarians believe him to be God. My answer very briefly explains why if you take the bible into account.
