Does anyone know where I can volunteer in the Raleigh, NC area to work with poor people or old people?

It's for a project and I need to get a few hours of volunteering in. The problem is I need to be able to do it before March 31 so if you know anywhere that will take last minute things please let me know.

I'm looking find somewhere for 1-6 people. If they don't take groups thats fine.

I would suggest that you contact your local volunteer center. They specialize in connecting you with different volunteer opportunities in your area. Many projects can be one-time or short-term to meet your needs.

I like to refer everyone to a Hands on Network affiliate, as they provide some of the best connections to non-profits and volunteer opportunities in your area. Your affiliate is called Triangle Impact:

Also in the area, another volunteer center through the Points of Light Foundation is the Volunteer Center of Durham:

Through my volunteer center, I've done quite a few projects, and regularly lead various things like tutoring and mentoring children, cleaning our parks and beaches, working at the food bank and at various shelters, and lots of other stuff.

Good luck!

Check out these websites. They will give you a list of opportunities in your area that will work for you. Every organization needs someone to help with stuffing envelopes, getting donations, working special events, etc. Good luck and enjoy the time volunteering.

Also check out the Yellow Pages under Charities, Animal Shelters, Religious Organizations, Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Social Services. There are so many places that need people, even if it is only 1 afternoon a week!

Call the United Way or the Salvation Army. Ask who feeds the homeless. The people who prepare meals for the homeless can always use a hand. You'll be peeling potatoes, serving food or washing dishes - nothing that requires any special training. It won't be particularly rewarding, but it will count. Tell the organizers up front that you won't be back, so they don't count on you the next time.

Just about any nursing home or assisted living facility would love to have a volunteer. Food pantry's are always in need of extra help too.
