Greenies are good because they clean their teeth.

When I'm looking for treats (I am also training two puppies - dachshunds) I always make sure to look at the ingredient content. Most likely, the better the ingredients, the better your pup will like the treat! I look out for treats that are high in by-products, lots of grains and fats. Try and stay away from this... which can be hard with treats. Secondly... when you find something you are comfortable with, keep these "special treats" for training purposes only. Only give them when your pup has done something positive... not just for munching on. I give greenies and rope toys for those times. I've found some neat lil gumdrop shaped treats from PetCo that we're fond of. My girls really love them and they know just the "tricks" to do to get them! Potty-ing in the right spot, Going in their crate on command, Sitting when asked. Good luck and ALWAYS keep a tally on what enters your dogs body. They will be happier, healthier dogs!

i make my own and my dogs love it.. and it saves money too.. here is the recipe..
3cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cupbacon grease or veg. oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
4 slices bacon-crumbled
1/2 cup water
mix all together. roll out onto a floured baking pan until its about 1/4 - 1/2 inch thick. bake for 35-40 minutes @ 325 degrees. let cool and harden. break into bite sized bits..
they will love them.. some ovens are hotter than others so make sure that you keep an eye on them so that they don' t burn.... good luck with your training..

you want really small pieces of a treat. if you give treats that make up more that 20% of your dog's daily diet, he'll become overweight. petsmart has these lamb, chicken, or beef rolls that you break into little bits. they are actually training treats.

Small pieces of dried liver are popular with dog trainers. Smell great to dogs and minimal fattening.
