There is definitely a generation gap. When I was young my Dad would not allow us to listen to rock and roll music. We grew up listening to the Grand Ole Opry and that was the only kind of music there was. When I was old enough to choose for myself and was in control of my own radio, rock and roll was on it. My kids grew up listening to Rock N Roll and then get old enough and in charge of their own radios and they listen to cRAP. In the meantime I have kinda went full circle and find myself listening to The Grand Ol Opry and any kind of old country or folk music I can find. We change as we age just like wine and cheese. Isn't it wonderful to (if we) live in a society that allows it to happen?

Absolutely not a myth...what it means is the difference in age and beliefs, say of your grandparents and you....nowadays parents have a closer relationship with their children so there isn't much of a gap, but between you and your grandparents, the generation gap is very obvious, they have a harder time understanding and believing in the same things that you do..
