Play dead yourself, first.

There are a few ways to do this. 1. Catching the dog in its natural behavior. While it's laying there still (no tail wagging) come over and say your command "bang", "dead", etc. then treat. The dog will start associating action with words.

2. Doing this step by step. Sit, then down, the putting the dog on its side, waiting till the tail stops then giving it the command "bang", "dead", etc then treat. DO NOT treat till you get the end result. That action is what the dog will associate with what it should do to receive the treat.

For example - if the tail is still wagging when you treat, you're going to have now teach the dog to stop its tail wagging before you treat.

Make sure you keep the dog in that position till you give him a command to get up. That way it won't just lie down then pop back up.

Good Luck

OK , this is how I taught my dog years ago to play dead. He was a big dog , a mixed breed that someone threw out in front of my house. Anyway. first of all I want to tell you this isn't' something they will learn over night it takes some time.

When you have you dog attention, you point your finger at your dog and say, bang Duke your dead at the same time gentle row him over on its side. Then tell him he is a good dog. You keep repeating this with lots of rewards and soon he will pick it up. I got mine when he was in full run yell Bang Duke your dead , that dog went down lol as he was wagging his tail I would tell him dead dogs don't wag tails that is when he would lay real still ..lol I miss that dog..he was the smartest mutt that I ever ran across. The people who threw him out will never know what kind of dog they had.
