I think there is at least one non-smoker in that group excluding you.
just slowly slip away from there as if you are talking to him...
If you are the only one non-smoker in that group the definitely you are not in the group you should be ..

No, walking away from smoke is not rude. I am an ex smoker. When I smoked I would never have smoked around non-smokers. That's because of a thing called good manners or consideration. Now that I don't smoke (For about 20 years) I refuse to be around it, it stinks. I do not believe all the hyperbole about second hand smoke, just don't like the smell.
Smokers and non-smokers have equal rights. A business has every right to be smoking or non-smoking and I have the right to not go where they are smoking. If you don't want to be around smoking don't go where people smoke. But places like cars and others' homes you may have to make a choice whether to be there or not. A person's car or their home is subject to their rules. Go there at your own risk.

I'm housesitting for a friend who smokes. My clothes and the house reek even though he has been gone for almost a week. I open the windows and freeze, but the smell returnes as soon as I close them again. And this is one of the safer aspects of second hand smoke.

well, hang with the half of the room that are NOT smoking.
As smokers join your side and light up, yes, MOVE AWAY from the smoke. Try to hang with them outside, where you have a chance to survive. It does sound like you have options, like this is not a work environment, where you have to be there. Don't worry about offending smokers, if they are smoking intensely around non-smokers, THEY are the ones being rude.
BTW: I found smokers to be MOST considerate when they knew that I was trying to quit smoking and that it was difficult for me to be around smoking.

What is truly rude is the fact that their smoke is infringing on your space.
If you absolutely cannot avoid it, try to stand where their smoke will blow the other way and not at you - see which direction the wind is blowing.
Also, if you could mention to them that you are allergic to the smoke, and if they are kind people they will politely stop or make sure the smoke doesn't come your way.

This is a two-way street. You know your friends smoke so either deal with it or make new friends but if they are "real" friends then they wouldn't smoke near you but step away or go outside to have a cigarette. That's what my husband and I do when we are around non-smoking friends.

If its outside stand upwind. Otherwise avoid where they are blowing the smoke and hold your breath if you must.

sit beside less smoker group, smile, and then calmly say: non smokers, let's give smokers more space. :)
smokers will understand your meaming, and I think they'll try to prevent you from their smoke.
