Beijing Beijing Beijing!
Firstly in Shanghai many people speak the local dialect so if you live there and learn that when you travel to other places in China it might be useless, ok not useless but you know what I mean. Also from my experience many people in Shanghai are very proud of Shanghai and look down on people from other parts of China. This might not affect you so much, but with this kind of attitude how can you expect to make "real" friends. Shanghai like someone else said is just like any other Asian city, nothing really special about it.
Beijing on the other hand is much better for a number of reasons. The culture there is much better, many more historical places to visit. The language is more or less standard Mandarin so once you can communicate in Beijing you should be ok almost anywhere else in China. The people there are a lot more down to earth and friendly. Honestly I can go on and on and on about why Beijing is better but I am a little lazy at the moment. Of course you might have a completely different personality from me, so who knows maybe Shanghai is the better place for you. If I had the choice though, I wouldn't need to think at all before making a decision!
Good luck wherever you find yourself in the future.
PS if you want to ask some Chinese there opinion about these two cities please have a look at my forum: www.daxueyingyu.com/forum

well i have never been to shanghai but i have been to Beijing, and i found it a strange place. the city is a modern town full of skyscrapers and very busy traffic and alot of dirt and pollution.i found the people mostly ignored me and were not especially friendly, and sometimes were very rude. the local Chinese food is nothing like the food you have eaten in a Chinese restaurant in England, and i have to say not to most westerners taste. the sights are interesting the forbidden city was interesting and the countryside around the wall beautiful while the wall itself was fascinating. also the summer palace was lovely. do watch the shopping if you shop in the named shops the prices are not so different from here, if you shop in the markets the prices are much cheaper but the goods are almost certainly fakes and maybe dont work correctly. silk and pearls are probably your best bet. but over all i have been to many other places i found far more interesting and exotic such as sri lanka and the carribean and Egypt and i would not rush back there. i hope that helps a little.

Beijing for Great Wall of China and Tourist Landmarks
Shanghai for shopping and quality of life
Both have really good shopping but Shanghai is cleaner & safer for a tourist if your travelling solo.
If your more than one person, Go to Beijing

Shanghai is more modern in the sense that it has everything any huge city has except more in number, cheaper in prices, & very likely more luxurious than most in the same category. Beijing is the capital, that is made up of both the very ancient & the most modern, a big smaller, but more cultural & traditional .

Been to both multiple times in the last 6 months, I prefer Beijing by far. It has both sightseeing and shopping. Shanghai is just another typical asian city. There is shopping - but the stuff are expensive and the selection is lame compared to Hong Kong.

Shanghai is better for living. Weather is better, more shopping, more entertainment.
Beijing is better if you are in a business that might need close relationship with the government.
