the purpose of the spikes was to deflect a blow of a sable to the head. The spike was at the start of WW I a remnant of the earlier wars where it happened that infantry and cavalry did fight each other at close range ( Napoleons wars ). Soon the helmets whit the spike where replaced whit the model that is also used in the WW II

Had I realised how much had been written by "Pickelhaube" (the German name for the spiked helmet) aficionados, I wouldn't have 'gone on a quick search, as this wont be too hard'. I think Wikipedia's your best starting point, using their links for further information.

head butt in a hand to hand. Mostly it got caught on brush and branches. Some guys appreciated the fact that it held the helmet in place when used as a bowl.
