How about starting a scrap book with her. Collecting ticket stubs etc, writing about the plane and airport etc, then all through her holiday she can add bits everyday of where you have been, what you did etc, stick postcards in. At the end of the holiday she will have a book on her travels.
You could also get some games that you would usually use in the car. If you go to AA.com they have some games listed. Perhaps a book to read
I'm sure she will be fine. Have a great time !

Gameboy and Super Mario will work for long hours with kids that age. You can bring other activities like crayons or markers and a tablet and also she should be old enough to read a couple books. If you don't own a Gameboy, borrow one. You may not want to get your child hooked on video games, but it may be worth it for the flight.

If she's not old enough to handle a 12 hour flight, please don't subject the other people on the plane to her inability to cope.

I don't understand, do you not care that other people on the planet exist?

Oh, I'm sorry--I'm sure that it's just every other 8-year-old on the planet that can't handle a 12-hour flight, but your child can.

You probably just need to give her a game boy or a book or something and simply ignore the icy cold stares from the people around you when she kicks the seats and talks loudly and complains.

Yeah, that's it. Ignore the other people with enough common sense to not take a child on an airplane.

Am I too cold with this answer? Maybe too harsh... but I'm also right. So please don't think my intent is to be rude and mean... that's just an unfortunate byproduct of the real intent, which is to say "Don't take your child on a 12-hour flight!"

Okay SERIOUSLY..since it's obvious you don't have them already factory installed in your car...get the portable/car DVD player. If you enjoy your sanity - you must! :) If your son watches any Nickelodeon or Noggin or Disney..get the DVDs of those shows & put them on automatic replay & enjoy yourself a nice *hopefully* quiet road trip! Also, if you don't want to be distracted by the noise of the DVD I'd look into the headphones. I have the wireless headphones - my daughter's almost 2 so she understands what they're for & is fine with wearing them. I'm not sure how your little guy would do with them. :) But I'd definitely look into it. Enjoy your trip! :)

Taking her to meet the pilot is a good way to break up the journey.

Activity pads such as puzzles, dot to dot pictures, coloring books, or her favorite books might the trick.
