Most travelers (from the EU, Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa) do not need a visa to enter the Macau SAR for 30 days. HK residents and portuguese nationals can enter without a visa for 90 days. If you are from a country that requires a visa, you can get one upon arrival in Macau for M$100. If your country does not have diplomatic relations with China, you must obtain a visa beforehand. The easiest way to get to Macau from HK is via ferry, using either Turbojet or HK & Yaumatei Ferry Company from the Macau Ferry pier in HK or from the Macau Ferry Terminal in Macau. One-way fares vary from $HK130 to $HK200.

There are trains, and ferrys. The only problem is that you need a Chinese visa, around $150, because the trains go through Guanzhou. Also, don't worry about booking anything now, I have been to both airports and there both have a lot of resources and cheap deals for travel. And, everyone speaks English, so it will be VERY easy. You can also get your Chinese visa on the same day in Macau (and Hong Kong.)

First Ferry goes from Macau to Hong Kong. Also, if you take train or bus via Guangzhou, that will take more of your time (like all day). It's not worth it. Pay the $$ for the ferry.
