There is a legal pill form of marijuana that helps cancer patients. My sons pediatric oncologist offered to prescibe marinol if he wanted it. He didn't. He often jokes that he's the only teen he knows where we live that can take drugs legally.
Instead of legalizing marijuana I'd rather outlaw cigarettes and alcohol too. But that probably won't happen as people have tried to do that in the past. There is nothing positive about marijuana for the general population. I would support legalizing it only for medical purposes . . which essentially has already happened.
It's such a non issue and so totally unimportant.

Marijuana affects the brain in such a way to make it dangerous to drive or operate machinery. Users can endanger other people while influenced by it. It can permanent changes in the brain in young people affecting memory and can trigger severe psychiatric problems for some people with a tendency towards psycotic illness. It is trafficked by organised criminals and some of the money ends in terrorist hands. It contains more potent carcinogens that tobacco. Let's be quite clear this is not a harmless substance-so why should it be legal?
Yes there are people who are chronically ill and report relief from pain. Properly controlled and tested pharmaceuticals containing the active ingredient are being made available to help them.
You are right about alcohol and if it was assessed as a controlled substance it would be a class A drug for the loss of life and misery it causes not to mention the changes in the brains of young binge drinkers.
The bottom line is that you have only one body and if you want to keep it in good condition be very choosy about what you put in it.

Marijuana is illegal because it is a dangerous drug.
When it's used medicinally it is carefully monitored by doctors and works to help people.
When it's used illegally there are no controls.
Cigarettes are bad, but no where near as bad as marijuana.
Cigarettes are controled by government regulations.
Marijuana is controld by drug pushers out to make big bucks.
That's the difference between those two bad/dangerous substances.

because most of america, at least the more vocal and politically active part, sees marijuana as a "bad" drug (although many prescription drugs have probly caused people even more problems for people)
basically, many people in america have grown up hearing that marijuana was "bad," accepted that, and have never chosen to challenge that belief
this will change in our lifetime, i know it.. im not sure if we will be able to smoke it necessarily (as they have learned how to put thc into pill form) but hopefully we will.. and when that happens im gonna smoke a big beautiful bowl (eventhough i stopped smoking a couple years ago)

marijuana is illegal because it is a schedule 1 drug, it has no real medical value, and its basically a therapeutic drug. marijuana is mind altering, i think that is also a big reason why the government made it illegal. people say and do stupid things when they smoke it.
