An euphemism is an expression used to reword or restate another word or phrase. The intention may be an attempt at politeness, to reduce the offense of the comment/term, to make the imagery less disturbing or troublesome, a circumvention of a taboo, or it may simple be double speak, an attempt to confound the listener by talking around the issue. It may also be used to elevate the seeming importance of a person's title.
Examples:
"Resting" vs. "being dead"
an athlete "favoring his leg", vs. "having an injured leg""
"making the beast with two backs", vs. "having s*x"
"custodian" vs. "janitor"
a student "being held back" vs. "flunking"
a "pre-owned" car vs. a "used" car
a "software engineer" vs. a "programmer""
"dang" vs. "d*mn""
"poo" vs. "sh*t"
"kick the bucket", "buy the farm" vs. "die"
"public servant" vs. "government employee"
"have a bun in the oven", "in a delicate way" vs. "pregnant"
Our language is rife with these expressions, and becoming even more so in this age of political correctness.
This being said, can you figure out what your teacher has given you if you're given "non voluntary lesson reinforcement assignment"?
