India is a secular country, but why the Muslim women are treated shabbily like any other Muslim country?

Though India is a secular country, there the Muslim women are governed by the Islamic law. The Islamic law is highly medieval and out dated. It does not suit Indian society where all are equal in the eyes of law. What was prescribed by Muhammad for application in Arab in the 6th century should not apply to Muslim women in India just because they are Muslims. For that the Muslim women should revolt against the system.

Muslim women across the world are not treated "shabbily". In India, the husbands and men just feel that they have a right over the women in their lives, therefore they treat them however they wish to, even though what they do is against the Islamic laws. I am a Muslim woman and I know many Muslim women. We are not, in any way, treated inferior. We are treated with alot of respect and understanding and are the queens of our homes. Many men misinterpret the laws of our religion to use them to their own benefits, whereas according to Islamic law, we as women have many rights to preserve our dignity in society. This problem is not experienced by all Muslim women, just a few who's male family members are ignorant of the true beauty and status of a lady in Islam! ;-)

Muslim women are treated with due respect like any other woman treated in an elite class in India. The uneducated Muslims due to lack of outlook might be not giving proper treatment to their women folk which can not be generalised. As has been rightly pointed out by some one that Hindu brides are being burnt on dowry issue is no reflection on the religion but lack of sense of values in the society. So also shabby treatment to women has nothing to do with the faith called Islam.

What one participant 'geerowkool' points out is totally out of context. It isn't religion which determines how women are treated: it's the attitude of men towards women. If you look at the amount of prostitution in any country, then you'll see that women are treated shabbily everywhere. Men need to make a stand and treat women with respect. Women need to stand up and become the ladies they should be in order to be treated with respect.

india is a secular, democratic country just for NAME. if u get to personally see the way muslim girls are treated, that is no different from pakistan or afghanistan. secularism of india has no hold on the disrespect and ill treatment given not only to muslim girls, but seen more also in other non muslim families.
i dont think securalism here has anything to go with the harsh conditions muslim or other girls lived in, it all depends on their parents fancies and social issues, and the worst point here is that these girls have without resistance accepted the hell they've been given

Muslim women are treated shabbily by Muslim men only. They are kept under veil, whether it is Hyderabad or Bhopal, Rajasthan or Karnataka, Kashmir or Kerala in India due to their religion and the control of their community is in the hands of the Mullahs who are basically uneducated.

I believe the Muslim women are treated better than their Hindus counterpart. A hindu women must give dowry to the husband's family. Many were tortured or killed because they could not pay up the dowry.
An Indian Muslim woman can marry any Indian man, but hindu women cannot marry those in the upper caste.

becasue its not Islam that teaches to treat women badly its the peoples culture You can read any scholarly article studying Islam without seeing bad treatment of women being acceptable. Women need to educate themselves and have self esteem and stop tolerating practices that are not even in ther eligion they profess. Men need to take responsibility for the same.
Also other religions such as Hinduism have some anti women practices. But also they would suffer from those who are practicing culture rather than religion. Many dont even know what their religion teaches they just imitate whatever they grew up with in the home. So abuse breeds more abuse. Poverty and ignorance do the same.

Male Muslims read in their out dated Koran and Hadith that women are like chattel who were war booties and being sold in open market in Arab during Prophet Muhammad's time. He did not condemn it when his supporters used to rape and ridicule the female members of the slain Kafirs (non Muslims). Even to-day Muslim women in general are treated like that except in those westernised Islamic countries like Turkey. In India the government wants them to be modernised but the Islamic law stands on the way.
