Heartworm positive dogs can be put on Heartgard. It will not kill the worm , but will prevent further infection. It will weaken the heartworm. A heartworm's life span is about 2 years. This is not a good option for a dog with a heavy infestation.
Another thing that people are doing is giving dogs Heartgard twice a month. The hearworm is gone in about 6 months.
A third option is holistic. Ambertech has a product to kill heartworm. http://www.ambertech.com A lot of people on the pet Yahoo Groups are saying that this works.

Most of the answers you received are for heartworm prevention. I too had to deal with this. I was able to set up a payment plan with the vet office. They generally understand that it is expensive and unexpected. You may also check to see if there is a vet school around I know the one in Ann Arbor Michigan will treat the dog as training for future vets. You need to do something quick though the longer you wait the less chance of the dog living thorugh the treatment. Good luck and please let us know how it turns out.

Don't try to treat heartworm if he's tested positive, it could kill your dog, the medications are risky and it needs to be closely monitored by a vet.
Prevention is cheaper than the cure and less problematic for the dog.

I really don't know how much treatments are for heart worm. Mine has been on heart worm prevention since they were puppies, but I can tell you if you don't get help for your dog he/she will die. Check with your vet I am sure that they will work something out with you. You know sometimes people will put stupid things on credit cards, maybe they should think about using them for their pets. Depends how long your dog had heart worms too. Some times it is to late. Just talk to your vet and see what they can do to help you. That would be my first choice.

Call the humane society, (or local ASPCA) many of these will help dog owners with medical bills they cannot afford.
Good luck to you and your dog.
