I would say about 10 hours by train... it is deffinitly worth seeing. I live 20 mins from Lago de Garda and spent new years there this past january. Try to see it in summer as it is much more fabulous that time of year. Either way you'll have a great time. Its the most beautiful place ive ever seen. And the prices arent bad although it is a tourist spot.

Lake Garda is 256 miles or 412km from Rome.
The lake itself is 51.6km long and 4km wide at the north and 17km wide in the south. The deepest point is 346m and it lies 65m above sea level.
If you are going travel around the lake and visit Malcesine, Limone in the north and Sirmione in the south- all beautiful small towns.

It is quite far. In fact the lake is located in the north of Italy. So it can be around 8 hours by train.
