for you who waited, how did you feel, what was the outcome. if cancer, what went through your mind. those who did not, same request. I really need to get the word out not to wait, no matter if a history or not. A history begins with one person

8 weeks ago i went back to my gp with a hard pea size lump.He referred me back to the breast clinic where i had an ultrasound straight away.I had a fine needle aspiration done the same day.3 days later they called me to say there was nothing to worry about. While my experience was quick and with a good end result i often hear of many women who have to wait months just to get an appointment. In the 3 short days i waited for my results i was convinced i had breast cancer,it was the worst 3 days of my life.I'm only 29 but i would urge all women of all ages to go to their doctors straight away and not to accept ridiculous waiting periods.I wish you good luck in all you do.....Take care

There appears to be some communication problems between the medical community and patients when it comes to cancer diagnosis and waiting. We often hear about the delays and waiting and patients becoming increasingly frustrated especially once diagnosed with cancer. The problem seems to be that a malignancy isn't all that easy to identify when it is small (under 1cm) . . especially a nodule.

Doctors have a reason for waiting and that is to be able to clearly identify what it is they are seeing. There are no real tests to take, just suspicion. Much depends on the skill of the doctor, his past experience with nodules, instinct, and a patients demands. A doctor will not begin to treat you for cancer (because treatment is harsh) until they know without a doubt that it is cancer (from biopsy and the nodule needs to be large enough to take a biopsy). Diagnostic testing is limited in what information it can provide . . it is unable to detect what nodules and small tumors really are or how extensive it might be. A doctor proceeds with caution (in slow motion as far as the patient is concerned) because they are not sure what they are dealing with. They may not want to disturb the site with a biopsy if they are uncertain . . because if it is a malignancy an accidental puncture of the tumor could spill its contents. They do not want to operate and put a patient through that trauma until they know exactly what they are going after . . you hear stories of doctors operating and removing only one tumor when in fact their are dozens that they miss.

Thus, a doctor proceeding cautiously will schedule a CT for something suspicious in order to establish that baseline. They are than required to wait at least a month before scheduling another test (unless they have a real reason - insurance is the one that ties their hands on that one! We know because insurance refused a second CT within 30 days from the last one on our son.)

So, everybody ends up being frustrated . . especially if the patients suspisions turn out to be correct and the spot ends up being cancer. Their anger is than turned on the doctor whom they believe should have known. However, the doctor has probably experienced hundreds of other patients whose nodules turned out to be benign or nothing significant . . and they are blamed for being overly cautious with too much testing. Go figure.

Although we are not dealing with your type of tumor. Our son has a rare, refractory, and a fast growing sarcoma. We have spent two years fighting his disease. He went 8 months with no evidence of cancer. When he went off treatment I told his oncologist that it was a mistake. She agreed but her goal is to cure the disease and we needed to find out if treatment had worked (which considering the amount of cancer he had . . it had worked). Still, it was an agonizing time and sure enough his next CT revealed a spot about the size of a pencil eraser on the dome of the liver. It was too tiny at that point to know if it was a reoccurence or not. But because of what we knew about his type of sarcoma we both thought that it was a reoccurence . . and wasted no time in planning future treatment. However, in order to be 100% sure we had to wait 28 days and schedule another CT to see if the spot changed. Extremely agonizing. We all knew it was cancer, but her hands were tied. And, yes, the spot grew . . only very slightly but enough to identify it as a relapse. Cancer is a vigilant and deceptive disease. You need to stay one step in front of it at all times.

Good luck with your poll. Though I am unsure what you can do without a definitive way to ascertain whether a spot or nodule is definitely a malignancy.

I can't answer you at present, I'm waiting. They think that its a blocked lymph node, but they aren't sure and want to wait 6 months. If you find out why they want to wait instead of just going on and doing the biopsy, pleas let me know. Its like finding out you cut yourself and saying don't clean now, lets check on it later. Then when its infected, then they want to treat it. Do you think that its peculiar or related that I also have an (all of a sudden)allergy to my deodorant on the side that they found the nodules.

l was given a test it was positive and the breast was removed and l was never told to wait. And a Doctor should not tell any one this. If l had to wait l can just say that l might be dead today. That was twenty years ago
