The Safest Neighborhoods are (in no specific order):
(1) Throgs Neck
(2) Pelham Bay
(3) Pelham Parkway
(4) Riverdale
(5) Spuyten Duyvil
(6) Parkchester
(7) Morris Park
(8) Co-op City
(9) Marble Hill [actually politically part of Manhattan (New York County) but connected geographically to the Bronx).
(10) City Island
While all these areas are pretty safe, they all have sporadic crime from time to time. Most of them do not have access to the subway such as Riverdale, City Island, Spuyten Duyvil, and Co-op City, so you will have to rely on a bus or car to get around. Other areas that were really bad many years ago such as Co-Op City have seen a renaissance and have seen influxes of new immigrant groups that have contributed to its' new found stability.

I agree with Luis. Riverdale is also nice but very expensive. Honestly, as long as you stay above the South Bronx, you will be fine. Any crime that happens to you in the North Bronx can happen in any other borough, including Manhattan.
The answers that bash the Bronx are very ignorant. I grew up there, went to private school, college & grad school. The Bronx had bad neighborhoods like any other borough in NYC. It's just that we got so much attention in the 70s & 80s that it's all people focus on. And there are many Caucasians living in the North Bronx, so you don't have to be a minority in order to feel safe there. Good luck.

I grew up in the Bronx and I find the Bronx the NYC borough with the most personality. Plenty of nice neighborhoods there despite the sensational media reports. Riverdale is one of the nicest neighborhoods in NYC. Pelham and Arthur Avenue are nice neighborhoods. Yes, there are real dumps in the Bronx just like any other city in the country. Yet, there are also plenty of nice neighborhoods. Another nice one is Woodlawn, and the area around Yankee stadium has improved over the years.

I really disagree with the first two answers, they really don't seem to know New York. Yes, there are areas of the Bronx I wouldn't be comfortable in but there are some very nice and affluent areas too. Pelham is very nice, mostly families and it is on a bay. You could take a walk on the water. There are some amazing homes there. Another area that is nice, is Throgsneck. A bit more moderate than Pelham but still a nice area. If you see adds offering Country Club Road, call! Good luck searching!

Ignore the answers that dis the bronx. The person sudggesting pelham bay is correct also Riverdale is a nice area. Stay away from the south bronx. Your best bet is ask the people at the company you will be working for.

Throggs Neck, Riverdale, etc But you do not need to live in the Bronx to work there. You can live in Manhatta, Brooklyn, Queens, or even Long Island and Westchester and still work in the Bronx.

I'm not from St Louis but have traveled there many times. As far as safety...I have never felt threatned while traveling/visiting there. I'm 32 yrs and have been driving there since I was 17 yrs. As far as the road closure thing. Yes there is major road construction going on. Check out modots website for travel. (modot.mo.gov) Some of the construction will be on-going for at least a year so it is a long-term thing. I didn't understand if you wanted your parents to stay at a hotel or with you at your apartment. Please clarify. Can't recommend places to rent since I'm not from there, but I have heard good things about Clayton and Brentwood both. Just don't go East of St Louis!!! Sorry I couldn't give you specifics. Good luck!
