If an elderly woman wants to smoke a pipe, that's her business, as long as she's in an area where smoking is allowed.

I would think of it in terms of health issues, versus politeness. However, I don't personally see it as impolite, any more than it's impolite for an old man (or any age man/woman) to smoke one. Unorthodox, perhaps, but after you get to a certain age, I suppose allowances are made for eccentricities! I say, if it makes her happy, go for it. At her age, I suppose any long term risks of tobacco usage are a moot point, unless she's been smoking one for all her life. If that's the case, then why stop now?

Like anything else at her age she has earned the right. If she chooses to smoke a pipe let her. Think about it, which would you rather smell, a cigar, a cigarette, or good pipe tobacco?

It is no different than the younger women who have taken to smoking Black and Milds and other cigars.

I think she's delt with society long enough that she's allowed to do anything she very-well wants to. Cheers to being old! Only 60 more years until I can smoke a pipe without giving a sh*t.

That is not an etiquette question. Smoking a pipe is cannot be considered rude in and of itself. If she were smoking it in a non-smoking area, that would be rude. But if she is in an area that smoking is permitted, then it's really nobody's business.

If she likes to smoke and it makes her happy - yes, why not? I know an old, sorry elderly, woman who smokes a hooka and gets great enjoyment from it! Good luck to her, I say.

I don't see why not. I once knew an old lady who lived to be 101 years old. I can remember her puffing away on her Benson & Hedges cigarettes while sitting in her wheelchair. It still gives me quite the laugh.

It actually used to be quite the rage a couple of hundred years ago.
Whether it is polite in today's society, or more particularly in N. American culture, I have no clue.

Doesn't matter whether it's polite or not. If that's her way of killing herself, you can't stop her, apparently. That she pollutes the air around her for everyone else doesn't matter to someone who smokes.
