If you had perpetrated a hoax of that magnitude would you gladly die a horrible death rather than admit the hoax? The disciples where given the opportunity to recant their beliefs or die. I've never heard of anyone who would continue to tell a lie while being slowly put to death. It doesn't make sense.
Also, they never got rich off preaching the gospel. They worked where ever they went and gave to the communities rather than take more than they needed for their stay. Does that sound like someone who has perpetrated a hoax? Again, it doesn't make sense.
