The Windows Installer (previously known as Microsoft Installer, codename Darwin) is an engine for the installation, maintenance, and removal of software on modern Microsoft Windows systems
There are other installer engines besides MSI too. Installers are the engine that gives you the wizards where you agree to terms, select the folder you want to install to, and select what customization installation you want then it extracts files and places them in your computer in the appropriate areas so a program can run. It places information into registry, etc and when you remove a program on your computer they bring up the unloader screens.
