The key to a great diet is moderation. Lean meats, plenty of fruits and veggies and whole grain carbs are what works best. Portion control is the key. Lean protein should be about the size of your palm. Carbs about the size of your fist. Two to three servings a day of low fat dairy. Five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables. 8 cups of water a day.
30 min of exercise a day is minimum. The important thing is to move. Find activities you like. Keep it interesting.

Any good professional will tell you a healthy diet includes all food groups - even junk food is fine in moderation.
To make it a "diet", cut back on unused calories (eat when you are hungry, not when you want to or because its the social thing to do), and eat well-balanced meals (grains, fruits/veggies, dairy and yes, meat).

Paleolithic.
1. Foods to eat: raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, pastured eggs, and meat. Grassfed meat is best. Eat organic whenever possible. Eat fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds raw. Eat eggs raw (immediately after you open them) if they are organic and pasture raised.
2. Foods to avoid: grains (including corn), dairy, beans (including legumes), squashes, and refined sugar.
Plenty of water, eat supplements only if they are concentrated food.
Eat like the caveman ate. Best diet ever. You will be lit.
