We have a large family and do not want to buy multiple copies of Vista. Is there a version that is capable of running on at least two computers and can be registered legally?

simply put*** NO you will have to call billy boy gates n give him your credit card info n let him sell you a second key for a few 100 bucks or so * price for xp is $150 per key for vista I'm not sure as I wouldn't have it in my machine sorry oh and to further make your day: if you change 1 or more components in your PC your present vista key will no longer be valid and you will have to buy another one as well. gotta love ol billy boy huh ~ we should start a charity fundraiser for his poor poor self huh, but hey he did send some illiterate to college in some foreign country Right lol what a guy

No. Each installation of vista requires you to have a seat license for each use. The only way that would be feasible is if you have a volume license which is for large corporations and is extremely expensive.
