A Beagle would be great for your family. They are prone to wonder so make sure when you walk the dog, you NEVER let him off the leash. Also, do NOT get a Beagle if you do not have a fully fenced backyard. They WILL wonder if they pick up a nice scent. Go to http://www.petfinder.com (if you are in U.S or Canada) and type in Beagle and your zip code/state for a list of shelters with Beagle's up for adoption.

For Mermaid: Hello...? All dogs are "pack" animals. They NEED to be in a PACK, such as a family of humans, to be happy. I think you should do a bit more research on dogs before you tell someone a certain breed, which would be great for his family, isn't a good pet.
For Mermaid: There is a reason why your pet Beagle attacked people. He needed proper training (given by a professional dog trainer) and thorough socialization. Sorry you and your friends were attacked by the Beagle and I'm sure he has scared you from the breed but after meeting my mum's friends' two Beagles, I know what an excellent breed they are.

One of the best dogs I ever had was a Beagle. I had girls at the time that were 7 and 5. I really think for all households with children that the dog should be brought up with the children, so I would look into getting a puppy. I must also state that you have to have the time to devote to properly training this puppy for the family. Don't expect your kids to do this. I think Beagles are well rounded dogs... They have a tendency to become overweight later in years though so you would have to be committed to regular exercise.

As for Mermaids comment: I too have been turned off on a breed because of a past experience that has really frightened me of Rottweilers. I know better in my heart that they are a great breed and I can appreciate all breeds but honestly... I would probably never have one around myself or my children just because of this experience. Its hard not to be bias about it. :)

Beagles are hounds and so are extremely active. Do not get one if you're not prepared for lots of very long walks, don't have a good sized well fenced garden or are prepared for a little bundle of hyperactivity tearing round your house. Make sure your kids are responsible enough to have a pet dog and never leave young children (under 10s) alone with it as every dog has a limit over which it can be pushed and any dog can be extremely dangerous once over that limit. Also make sure that if you get a rescue one it has been temperament tested and is defo ok with kids or you could be in for a nasty surprise.

Well, when we got our beagle, I was 9 and my big sister was 11. At first we had big problems with him because he was so playful. But, once he got all the rules down, he became sooooooooo sweet and loveable! A beagle will really be a good house pet. Caution: Beagles are VERY playful. They get you up at 4:00 in the morning, but you'll love him for doing that eventually! Have fun with the beagle!

They are energetic, they were used for fox hunting and the like and had to keep up with horses so they could need a lot of exercise, don't let the size fool you,

They need to have companionship and will dig if they get bored so a sandpit might help there.

Like any breed of dog, you need to get them from a good breeder with parents of a good background. You also need to be able to train them and ensure you have what they need and can give them the attention they need. Any dog can be dangerous if not properly bred and raised, all dogs need training and don't leave it til the pup is 6 or 7 months old, start as soon as you bring it home. (there's a nastly beagle at the end of our street and has dangerous dog signs posted as per local laws) they need appropriate outlets for their normal behaviours to stop them becoming bored.

Having said that, they are lovely dogs and are an ideal family pet as long as you can give them what they need.

To the person that said they were bitten, I was attacked by a Schnauzer, it can happen with any breed.

Definitely! A few words of caution though... they do have a tendency to want to escape as their tracking instincts kick in. Just make sure they have adequate fencing. Beagles are great dogs and I have never seen one with a bad temperament. I board lots of Beagles in my pet boarding facility and they are all a joy to care for. Be careful about overfeeding as they can easily become overweight. I love the way they look like puppies even when they become old.

Yes.
Kept beagles for years.
They need good training so get a puppy from a GOOD breeder. Mkae sure its not a puppy farm as I was told recently by the Beagle walfare that some of these horrid breeders are xbreeding them with whippets.
Beagles were used to hunt rabbit & hare on foot so thier noses are always on the floor & will be off like a shot.
There good nature makes them good for animal experiments
Hope they all come back to haunt those that have abused them
They love food & will get fat quckly, need lots of excercise.
They are bin & bag burglars. Sniff out sweets miles away.
Love to lay on sofas ,chairs, you & any where but thier own bed.
They are great have not met one that did not get on with kids.

Beagles are very bouncy/friendly dogs and normally great with children. But you must understand that they are part of the hound group and they may never be as obedient as you want them to be. You could call and call your dog and they would be on a scent trail that they may not listen, not the dogs fault just what they do.
Adorable tho and v.happy little things!!

a beagle is a sturdy and compact hound with medium length legs and is traditionally used to hunt hares so they are energetic dogs and they make a affectionate and playful pet. they also display remarkable stamina and tenacity so be prepared to go for long walks every day and make sure you dont let the dog wander off because if it picks up an interesting scent it will walk for miles tracking it and the you will lose it

A beagle is a great pet for you and your children because they are playful and active, but at the same time sweet and loving they wouldn't hurt a fly
