It depends if it's closed pyometra (the uterine infection) or open. In some cases if it's too bad, they have to insert a drain and leave it for a few days before they can operate.

Any surgery carries a risk because of the anaesthetic especially since she is old but in the hands of a skilled and competent vet and their techs, she should come through ok, she will probably need antibiotics when she comes home. She will die without the surgery so the risks have to be weighed against the benefits, it's her only shot! Spaying would have prevented it.

I hope she is alright.

It's not too serious. Your vet should run you through what they are going to do and what symptoms will be, after the surgery. Make sure that you urge your vet to leave the dog at the clinic over night so that they can monitor her thoroughly. She will probably need anti-biotics or medicine to help her recover after surgery.

Good luck and I hope she recovers quickly.

Edit: I think that your vet is taking a risk putting an 11 year old dog under anesthesia. Talk to your vet about possible risks and weigh up the benefits and negatives to having this surgery. Make sure that your vet is confident that your 11 year old dog will be able to survive the surgery. I really hope everything goes well!

It sounds like your dog is going to have a hysterectomy. If that's the case your dog will recover very quickly. I'm sure that the infection will be controlled By drugs. I've enclosed a link to a web site where you can light a candle for your dog's Recovery .

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your dog.

All surgery is serious. The age and condition of the animal will play a part in the recovery of the animal. Your pet is being cared for by trained professionals so it will surely be in good hands. I wish your pet a speedy recovery.
