My 5month old Cocker Spaniel Lab x puppy is pretty disobedient when we ask her to 'come'. She will act like she didn't hear us and carry on doing her own thing.

At home, she is good, she will come when ever we ask, it's just that when we are out and she is off lead, say at a friends or dog exercise park, she wont come.

We use treats but she is still no interested. She knows exactly what the comand means, and she does it when she feels like it.

Apart from that she is well behaved.

What can we do to get her to come when we ask her?

This is the result of an obedience program based on the reward and no correction system. It happens to every dog and it is something that we trainers who have been doing this for a long time, have tried to tell people. The reward you are offering is simply not worth enough to the dog for her to respond. First of all, it is a sign of disrespect to you as the owner. Put a prong collar on her that is tight enough to be sitting high on her neck, behind her ears. Get a long line/rope, how long depends upon you, attach it to the prong and call the dog to you when she is most distracted. If she listens and comes, no problem, if she does not, give a good hard correction on the long line and reel her in. You should be able to hear the effect of the correction you gave her. Reel her in all the way to you and make her sit. Praise and give treat, if you are so inclined. Repeat again and again, on a daily basis until you are sure that no amount of distraction will keep her from coming. Correct harder if you need to till she gets the idea that not listening to you is an unpleasant experience and listening to you is great. Never take her out without a long line and never call her to you when you cannot make her come. If you have a problem with the prong collar or correcting our dog hard enough, you will always have a dog that does not care enough to listen to you and will eventually get killed by not responding to your command to come when called.

Get a long line and choke collar.

Get about 15 feet away and call the dog. Immediately pull her toward you. When she gets to you, no matter how much she resisted, praise her.

Do this continually for about 5-10 minutes every day (preferably at the same time) until she comes immediately when you call.

Try it without the line. If she doesn't obey, add the collar and line and continue.

She'll learn relatively quickly. It just takes patience. and consistency. Don't call her more than once before you make her come to you. You must be firm and consistent. She should comply with one command.

Any time she reverts to the old behavior, start the training again. Both you and the dog will be much happier.

I have a puppy she is also very lively when were out and about especially when she is around other dogs.

The best way will take time but every time you call her and she doesnt listen go and get her and bring her back to the spot you were calling her to then praise her.

Try not to offer treats because she will become immune to these if she simply thinks that her surroundings are more interesting.

I couldn't advise on what method to use while training but I suggest that you ask her vet for a recommended dog trainer to help with this problems. Not much help but hope I helped a little ;)

Good luck!

She knows she is not at home and is unsure of her boundaries and surroundings. When she gets more confident and a little older, she will listen when she is not in your home.
