our new tiny kitchen has this cherry-looking cabinetry made of a material like pressboard. i wish to change the color and perhaps install some glass on some of the doors, but i am unsure if i could paint or cut such a material. will cutting and/or painting over it destroy this material? please help!

The "cherry look" is probably laminate or photo coated material. You can change the color with paint. If the top coat is not real wood, then staining will not work. If the cabinets are pressed board, I would not cut sections out to install glass. This would alter the strength of the doors.

Be sure to lightly sand with some 150 grain sandpaper and prime before painting. If you are a novice, I wouldn't try installing glass in the doors - that could turn into a nightmare quickly - good luck
