An just recently I am starting to like my really good friend that is African American. But I don't mind what the color of people are and he really isn't even African American I mean he is but really really light skined...so should I follow my parents rules...or what? But he's a really great guy that I care about a lot...<3

I don't think what he looks like matters as much as his culture. It's important that you share spiritual and political beliefs with your partner, for when you have children. And, other things, to keep together as a family, such as taste in food and where you want to live can be important.

My parents had cultural barriers, and it made them clash. They couldn't adapt to each other's viewpoints. It wasn't about skin color though, it was about culture clash. My dad gets along with my mother's family just fine (they don't live with him and we're all part of the extended family), but not her anymore.

It's not about what your parents think, but don't do it just to rebel. When you're still living in their house, you follow the house rules. But when you've grown up, make your own decisions, but think about them. A relationship is a very important thing, a very important decision, and only you can make that choice.

I am partially african american. I have been turned away before because of my race plenty of times. It hurts to know this problem still exists.

Your parents are old fashioned and have prejudices. Perhaps they should watch the movie "Crash" It's about racism and even the more subtle aspects of it and how it's still bad. If they don't like Oscar worthy movies or if you want to mask it as a teeny bopper movie, try "Save the Last Dance"

Let your parents get to know him and possibly even his parents as well. Old fashioned style.

If they still resist, remind them this is the year 2007... slavery has been over for a long time, blacks have voting rights, have made numerous contributions to society, and have human feelings and emotions just like everyone else. They are only continuing a long repetitive cycle of hatred and oppression. You don't have to commit violent acts against a race to be racist.

As a last resort, start sporting buttons and banners that say, "Vote for Obama Barack" Sorry, a little humor.

This you decision not some elses honey. You may want to know that if is okay but there is a lot of reasons on why your parents don't want you to do this. This is not based on the other persons color. It is just that your parents are not used to this and if you want to be with this person. Make sure they see that he is treating you right and that you are happy. If they love you and want to make sure your happy then they will make sure there is something that is allowed. Good luck!

Follow your heart but keep your brain turned on. Are you dating him to get back at them or rebel or because he is a really nice guy who treats you good. I was dating a girl who left me because her family wouldn't have accepted me and she was afraid to go against them, personally I think she was a worthless coward who will never be happy because she let her parents rule her life. And yes she was an adult.

Its up to you. You know this guy more than any member of your family. Do you really love him or is it mere infatuation? Does he love and care for you? Does he consider you first in any decision he's taking? If yes follow your heart and damn the world for you cant please them. Live a fulfilled life for we have but only one chance.

Your parents are prejudice and racist. If the boy you like is a good person you should go for him. So what if your parents do not approve, it's only becuase they have stupid beliefs. Be your own person and follow what you believe in.

ask your mom if she said that because he's african american (because of his race), or because she thinks all african americans are gangstas or whatever, or is it because she just doesnt want you to date someone who she thinks you might not have enough in common with..
