A kiln is a thermally insulated chamber or oven in which a controlled temperature regime is produced. A kiln is required to come to a controlled temperature, often very high, and so the design of the ovens normally focuses on insulation, and the ability to add fuel over a course of time.

Advantages of VSK
1. Low air pollution due to low velocity of exit gases and no water pollution as no effluents involved in the process.
2. Lower maintenance cost.
3. High refractory life.
4. Possibility of temporary shut downs upto 48 hours without appreciable loss of heat and material in process.
5. Low cost investment - almost 2.0 times lesser than the similar capacity of Rotary Kiln Plant.
6. Vertical Shaft Kiln (VSK) plants can be operated easily by personnel with appropriate technical qualifications.
