Historically, the US military does not allow women to serve in combat situations. While in many cases, this practice has been mitigated, the Navy Seals is one area which has yet to become coed.

As for my personal opinion, I believe anyone who cannot meet the minimum physical requirements (regardless of gender) should NOT be allowed to serve in any branch. Added to this, I believe that fighting in wars is a job that only men should do... not because women are unable to do so, but because men should volunteer above any woman. I am a Southern gentlemen, and as such would rather fight than have my wife, sister, mother, etc. fight in my place. I am also a firm believe in "women and children first" when it comes to saving lives. As a man, it is my Biblical duty to protect all women and children.

Women are not allowed in any combat position (IE infantry, tankers, artillery, special forces, SEALS) mostly because of societal views in America. While women's rights have been championed for some time and equality is closer than it ever has been, it is still a long way off. The American public is still not prepared to accept the idea of sending women to fight battles. It has been accepted and working in many other countries for years. Some day it will be the same here.

Women are not allowed to be in any combat field in any branch of the service. The Navy SEALS are the Navy's elite..like the Army's Special Forces or Green Berets. Those fields are of rigourus traning and physical demand. I am sure there are some women out there quite capable of meeting the demands. Its more of a psychological thing then anything. Men don't want women in combat for so many reasons. I used to think women should be allowed in combat. I still think they should..but not in all combat positions. Having a member of the opposite sex in combat with you can cause problems as far as for your ability of being able to focus on the task at hand, often times you don't get to shower for a week or two at a time when you are out in the field. What would a woman do out in the field for 2 weeks with no shower while she was on the rag. NASTY!! Also, men don't want to see women dying. It is a subconscious reminder of their sisters, wives, mothers, etc. Very hard to deal with mentally. Those are just a few of the reasons for them not being allowed in just combat..let alone elite forces such as the SEALS.

Because, hand to hand combat is a skill that is required of a Navy seal, and women are the weaker sex. It would not be fair to put a woman in a situation where she has to go toe to toe with a burly man.

The SEALS aren't GI Jane. That's friggin Hollywod.

Most men don't have the physical capacity to be SEALs, why do you think a woman could handle it? You would have to be just as strong as any other member of the team.

I thought GI Jane was?
Well, because in general women are not only weaker then men, they are more emotional and unable to handle combat stress. The are more a liability in such operations let alone being any kind of support.
They do make great nurses and cooks though.

I upthumbed the two that were correct answers.

Women are not to serve in combat roles. The SEAL teams are combat units.

If a woman was physically capable, and that combat role rule wasn't in place, she could serve.
