A "friend" suggested that castration would calm him down.I have my doubts

Check out the food you are giving him as that could be the cause. Try going to a dry already prepared mix and see if he calms down at all. Poodles are inclined to be excitable anyway but before drastic measures try the food route.

You can buy tablets now to calm them down,from the vets .I love standard poodles and you are very lucky to have one I feel envious.

Castration isn't a substitute for training. Try changing his food to one with a lower protein content. Make sure he gets enough exercise & take him to training classes so that you can learn how to teach him to settle at home.
