i have heaps of expierence with cats , i alos have 5 of my own all different. depends if you want a nutty playful cat , a lap cat a energetic cat or a lazy cat. tabby cats are really good freindly loyal cuddly, if you want a nutty cat go with the siemes cats, but personally i fond that cross bred cats are better, you dont get alot of the gentic problems with pure breds and not so strick with diets

Ads in the newspaper are a good source. The kitten you need should be at least 2 months old and weaned and litter trained already. The eyes should be bright and clean, the fur shiny and the kitten active. No discharges from the nose. Then sit down and see which kitten you get along with the best. Sometimes a kitten will just look at you and you know it is the one. Other times a kitten that doesn't look anything like what you had pictured will come up to you and purr and rub on you and you know it is the one. You can almost hear a voice saying, "Take me home."

Then be prepared to take your kitten to the vet to make sure it doesn't have worms or fleas and then get its first vaccinations. Then you should have enough money to get it spayed/neutered at about 6 months of age. Are you ready for that financial responsibility?

Disregarding what Kittycat said, cats are considerably easier to get a hold of then other domestic animals like dogs. As long as the kitten has been give two to six weeks to be weened off it's mother, than any local newspaper ad, or even a cardboard sign on the side of the road saying "Kittens here" with an arrow on it, will do.

The nice thing about cats is, most people give them away for free, all you need to do is have them vaccinated.

As for what kind, it's hard to say. You need to just look at many different cat pictures and then try to identify what type you prefer. If you are dead set on a particular kind though, be warned you may have to run an advertisement yourself or pay considerable money for a certain breed.

Do not fall victim to shelter or 'pound' animals. At least they have food, shelter and care. Animals that are born to a large litter and cannot be taken care of by the owners, may easily end up abandoned or stray.

Get kittens from someone's home, not a shelter.

Shelter 100% -Dork quit being such a Dork!!.
In the spring shelters and rescue centres are inindated
with cats and kittens that MANY have to be fostered out (trust me on this one I've done it hundreds of times).
One (among many) advantages to getting a pound cat is that
most every shelter will vaccinate, deworm, and probably spay or neuter your new friend...this is the cost you are charged
One way or the other if you do get a kitten from "a cardboard sign on the side of the road" how will you have any idea if that cat isn't sick, dying, or even part feral with feline leukemia, often you can't tell, actually most of the time, and YOU will
end up paying for all those treatments yourself (not to mention SpCA etc usually get vet deals ie, where you'd pay well over $100 per spay or neuter they pay like $30.
I guess it simply my opinion (one who has 7 rescued cats) that its the only way to go...you have some reassurance.
As for the type well well you have lots to choose from
some of my favs are your good old Shorthaired Domestic Tabby---so good, and loving. I also like Calico's but did you know calicos are only girls??? Tortiseshell oohhh adorable. I've had a Himilayan (mix) and he was fantastic but some what "snotty", Persian are gorgeous but lots of work to keep gorgeous, amd I have had Siamese (not my favs) a little to stand offish for me. And well those big old Orange tom cats bless their hearts I just melt for them. BUT the best cats I have ever had (all of them hahaha) have been the ones where I simply went to the shelter and usually "the one for you" will let you know, maybe he'll come up to the front of his cage, meow at you like come here come here pick me!!! You just seem to know...you might have to look a few times BUT I bet you anything one will stand one and you'll both fall in love!!! (shelter cats are also often very aware that they haven't a home and REALLY appreciate home when they get there).

I really hope you find what you are looking for and YES this is very soon coming to be kitten season, I just yesterday got my first call to foster a litter of 5 and mama.
Best of Luck!!! Just promise me you'll spay or neuter your new friend (its simple the only responsible thing to do for everybodies sake) okay!!

Try the newspaper ads during the spring & fall months if you're looking for a Kitten. Or you can contact local breeders for the kitten of your choice. I just got a tiny persian named Mindy. I highly reccomend the breed because they're so sweet and gentle. Perfect for kids.

Go to your local humane society or pet shelter. They always have kittens, and saving one from that situation would be the best thing you could do.

absolutely the best would be one you get from your local animal shelter or any other animal rescue facility. the animals in these places are so loving because they know what it is like to not have a home, even the kittens. just check out your phone book or search online for 'humane society' or 'animal rescue' in your area to find out what places are nearby.

Amina, you can get one in a cat shelter. Search for a cat shelter in your community. You'd be doing your community service if you do this. Search in the web for cat shelters, and find one near your place.
