It's not that athiest do not believe, they do not desire to accept God's influence in their lives. As always, when the heat is on, what is in the heart will come out. Since God is the Creator, His stamp or impress is in the heart of every person. Whether they choose to believe in Him or not, doesn't change His existence, nor His love for them.

Wise ol Owl is right. Everyone knows God exists, atheists and non-Christians alike just refuse to accept it because they want to be on the throne and they want to have complete control over all things. They refuse to allow anyone else to to be more important than themselves.

I say all manner of things. But because I don't believe in a God, there isn't the same related profanity to it's use - I am not "using his name in vain". I also say "Jesus Christ" as an exclamation (I picked that one up from watching South Park), 'oh crap" and "bugger" - all of which are not literal to my situation. See - we use words that are disassociated with the actual situation. Therefore it is way more relevant for a non-believer to say "Oh god" or "Jesus christ" than for a believer.

A line I recently heard which made me giggle was "thank god I'm an atheist" - some people also have a sense of humour!

It's a common phrase for one thing. Considering the majority of the people use it all the time to show frustration or excitement, I don't see how someone can think that means they are all calling On God just because they say "Oh God".

Nice little twist... but I doubt it will work.

It's just an expression of various emotion depending on the implied intent, but accordingly, and as usual, with little thought implied. It could also, depending on how the individual expresses their words, be considered taking the lord God's name in vain. None the less, they don't really consider a correllation between God and the statement...like saying " He really sh*t the bed on that one," it doesn't really mean somebody did this.

All humans believe in some form of God so they say this to the one they believe in. Piece of wood, stone, money, ect. Idols of silver and gold are the most popular but when all the silver and gold melts back into the ground on the day of the Lord they will say "O God."

Why do believers pretend not to know what an "expression" is?

Probably the main thing that I've learned since coming to Y!A is that many believers absolutely terrified that there are atheists, and willing to make up whatever "facts" they need to, no matter how silly, to deny our existence.
