What amount would you base your tip on at a dinner theatre? I just went for a 'girls night out'.. we all had separate bills (thank goodness!) and at the end of the evening the tip was calculated in as a "courtesy, suggested only".

The service was fine.. however the percentage was based on the total bill, which included the show (the value of the food in a regular restaurant would have been roughly half the price of the dinner theatre ticket) as well as all the taxes (which are HIGH here in the land of "sin tax").

Servers in this area are covered by minimum wage laws and receive at least $8 an hour.

Based on the above info, I felt that the 'suggested tip' was too high, and left less than the suggested amount. I still left $10, which I feel was more than adequate for serving one person.

Do you think that what I left was reasonable.. or too cheap.. or too generous?

I'd suppose that $10 was fine. I wonder where this area is. When I lived in Vegas, I was told that the price of the ticket also included the tip. However, if I wanted a good seat, I should lay $20 on the matre' de at the door. He shared tips with ushers. $20 got me and my party front row center at the Newton show.

How much was the bill?

I think that the tip should be 12.5% of:

Food & beverage value + local tax

The tax should be included since the service guys (formally..) need to deduct that from the tip you are leaving.

Definetly you should have ignored the `suggestion`. Merely trying so squeeze a couple of extra dollars from you

I actually just posted a blog about this subject. I am an actor/server at a dinner theater in MD. In the blog I discuss the situation from the perspectives of both the tipping patron and the receiving actor. I hope this provides the answer you are looking for:

in my personal opinion, given the fact that ive been in the restaurant buisness for most of my life. Ive always(as a custimer) over tipped unless the service was poor or I couldnt afford to give more. Dont OVER do it by leaving something outrageous. Do what you feel comfortable with. Most people tip according to what their SUPPOSED to which i feel is actually an insult to myself and to the servers who rely on this as income. I feel you should tip according to how much the server "affected" you (were they funny? were they uptight? were they caring? did they make you feel comfortable?).
