What are the difference between these two types of carriers? Both belongs to Japan but is JAL the national carrier of japan and ANA privately owned? Which is more reputable in your opinion? Which is making more profit?

You are basically correct in your assumption. In the early 1950's Japan decided that it needed to establish a national ail carrier. JAL was created, and given national flag airline status, and exclusive rights to use the words "Japan Airlines" in their livery.It was also initially government owned and operated. Today the main difference is in which Japanese cities each is the major player. Both are equally reliable, but JAL is more profitable simply because it is the larger of the two.

That's like asking why is United bigger but American look like a flag carrier. :)

Every nation that can afford it can have more than one international carrier. Heck, even a tiny island like Taiwan (ROC) have two: China Airlines, and EVA Airways.

Both are perfectly reputable.

ANA seems to be making more money, as least in '05, according to this article I dug up in Google:

ANA : all nippon airlines
JAL : Japan airlines
