Yes I have to admit I do !!! As a portrait painter myself I can admire them and understand the obvious joy they gave the the person who commissioned them . I am not exactly sure when the change came but who would truthfully want their darling child , wife or mother represented by Bacon or Freud ? These days the artist pleases himself and all the art critics adore this attitude before the artist pleased his client and this change is really , in the history of things very recent. I do hate I am sorry to say the phrase 'things have moved on ' Yes and stopped and are soooo boring Duchamp 1916 dirty beds 200? .
Sargent represented the aristocracy which also not fashionable .......I put on a accent when i applied for Chelsea and only got in on the strength of that I think

Yeah, he's great but I don't want to talk about him. Art has gone way beyond him. Much has already been written...I don't think I could add anything more.
