Numerous species of birds have excellent memories, especially crows, parrots, woodpeckers and most migrating species. Crows and parrots will remember people they saw once years ago. The bird species that takes the crown, though, is a species of Nutcracker that hoards seeds in special spots called cashes. They'll hide as many as 33 THOUSAND PINE NUTS and have been seen remembering where they hid every single one.

Gee. I have enough problems remembering where I left my socks last night!

Many species do have good memories. Woodpeckers need to remember where they have stored all thier nuts, and hummingbirds will visit the same feeders year after year during migration. Even in cases where the feeder is removed, they will come back up to 5 years later to check that spot to see if the feeder is there again. Birds also have to remember where their nests are, which can sometimes be very well hidden. They also remember food sources on their migration routes so that they can visit them yearly.

Many birds have excellent memories, especially spatial memory. Lots of migratory birds return to the same summering and wintering grounds, often to the same exact spot every year. Birds that are known to cache seeds have very good memories for exactly where they put them, even up to thousands of seeds.
