They mean dogs that aren't your own and may be an aggressive breed...mine is a sweet natured although huge Mastiff and he thinks it's a challenge of his territory and a threat to me if someone tries to stare him down. If it's your own dog you can look deep into those doggie eyes and see nothing but love and their soul. Mine is great around the grandkids but if the mailman looks at him wrong he goes all protective especially if the kids or I am out in the yard.

Ok, it really applies to a dog u don't know that well/at all it is a sign of aggression. We u look straight in a dogs eyes you are challenging it...you can look in it's eyes..then look away. Stareing into a unknown dog's eyes it just a aggressive signal you put out.

Some aggressive, dominant dogs perceive direct staring as a threat and a challenge, as that's how other dogs behave when they're in the mood for a fight.

It depends. Is the dog wagging his tail, and friendly. If so then their ok. If they are growling, try to keep your eyes on them but not directly in their eyes. Dogs have been domestic ed for so long now that is not really necessary. Wild animals-it is a direct challenge. Oh bye the way, if the dog is growling and you are not afraid. Stare right in his eyes and tell him to get lost.(in your own words of course(loudly)

I have a chihuahua so I don't really fear staring into his eyes. Actually come to think of it, if he is bad I just stare and he gets the sad "I'm sorry" look in his eyes. But I will definitely never do it to a rotweiler. Just in case it is true...LOL.

Some dogs will see this as a threat .
Ive always heard of this being used as a training technique to show dominance .

Most animals take direct eye contact as a sign of showing dominance .It is seen as a challenge.you are saying to them I am more dominate then you.Even with a gentle pet if you attempt to hold and lock eyes with them they will most generally look away.So that is why with strange animals it isn't a good idea to lock eyes or stare at them.Less of course you are willing to show them you are dominate.

If you have a dog that is submissive it can cause them anxiety, fearfulness and even be the reason for submissive urination, some dogs can handle direct eye contact and some can't

to stare into a dogs eyes is like presenting a challenge, like you are trying to be in competition with them. if its anyone elses dog, i wouldn't do it under any circumstance. however, if it is your dog that you have had for a while, like mine, who i have had for 7 years, even though she is very aggressive with strangers, she will calmly gazy for a few moments and then bow her head, almost out of respect for you.
