I have a 9MB file which has 10 worksheets in it. I would ideally like to bring the file size down to 1MB without having to delete any of the data.

Open the file
In each sheet make sure you have data in all the rows down until the end of the sheet
If you have making some formatting without data, then you can simply delete these rows of formatting
I faced this when I had a sheet with only 250 rows of data, but the rows until 50000 were formatted
So, when I deleted the empty rows, but formatted, and saved the sheet, I got a small size of file

Create a folder that is compressed in windows. To do this create a new folder. Right click the folder and select properties. Then on the general tab click the advanced button and then tick the box that say "compress contents to save disk space" If you also specify folder and sub folder and files it means that any files you save in the folder will be automatically compressed for you. When you view the folders with windows explorer the compressed folder names will be highlighted in some way to inform you that they are in fact compressed. Warning: do no compress all folder on your PC. It good for data files but can make [programs and windows run slower if you apply it to everything on you computer. Just do one folder or My Documents if you like.

If you want to make it smaller for emailing, you may want to consider using software like WinZip to create a small, "archive" version of your file.

If you switch to Excel 2007, the new file format makes for much smaller file sizes.
