I was talking about my friend (whom, I admit, is a bit naive) and somehow we got to talking about religion, and she seems to think that all Christians force their religion upon others, priests molest little boys, and they loathe gays. I tried convincing her otherwise...
I'm not exclusively Christian, but what has made its reputation so tainted? The media?

And also, she likes to flaunt the fact that she's Buddhist. But what I've studied of Buddhism, Buddhism is mainly percieving things for what they are and keeping a keen, open mind. Doesn't sound very Buddhist to me.

I think it is a combination of several things. First off, there are a few Christians who do force their religion down other people's throats and act as if they are better than everyone else. As Christians we should be compassionate and love everyone, the few of us that don't are portraying our belief in a bad light and causing hatred. Also the ones that do nasty stuff like molesting kids, but it's not only priests that molest kids, 'ordinary' people do too, it's just that the priests are highlighted. People forget that they are also human and make mistakes. I personally don't hate gay people but because I am a Christian and don't conform to the belief that being gay is perfectly ok doesn't mean that I have to go out there and bash people about being gay. The Lord teaches us to accept and love everyone as equals and show them the way with our actions. Lastly, I think with this whole pseudo-intellectual resistance to the notion of having faith and beliefs, it has now become a trend to hate on Christianity because it is 'cool' to believe that there is no God these days. What people don't realize is that when I say I am a Christian, I also get atheists trying to force the 'fact' that there is no God down my throat as well. Just look at all the people on answers doing it.

The media hasn't helped. They are mostly secular progressive and have an agenda to get rid of Christianity. It's a stumbling block to the "big brother" and one world government. There are also a great many teachers who have been indoctrinated in the same movement. Much of the anti-Christian bias is coming from the academic community who have little or no real information about Christianity.

There are over a billion Christians in the world. I'd be surprised if there is a single belief or practice that is accepted and adopted by "all".
Forcing beliefs, abusing children and hating gays are things that people do (and some describe themselves as Christians), but to say "all" Christians subscribe to this is... shall we say, an exaggeration.

As a christian who has been persucated for the faith i have come to understand your friends mindset a bit. We christians are full of God light and we expose darkness just by being around sinners we bring conviction to there hearts. Your friend as a buddiest should read what Jesus said, he spoke of the mind and the heart of man.
Ask you friend this question. Have any buddiest ever done evil. Then remind her that all have done evil according to God. All have sinned. Ask her this question. Have you ever lied. She will say yes. Ask her if she has ever murdered a person with her words. It is called gossip?
You will have her attention then. And ask her is Jesus was not God please explain to me whom he is. You get the point. Also ask for the holy spirit to give you the words to say. Good luck.
Every one get a bad rap in these days. Satan accuses everyone.

It's a lot of things. Even some Christians themselves help to further this confusion.
If they only preached the Gospel like we are supposed to! I mean, we can talk about other things, sure. But when it coems to answering questions about what makes a Christian a Christian, they need to stick to the Gospel, that all who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ will be saved. He died and was resurrected, and if we believe, we will also be resurected unto eternal life.
It's seems so difficult for Christians to adhere to that!

I think you are right - the media distort so much. The Daily Mail set out to destroy the millennium Dome. Kept saying loads of lies about it. I went (basically because if the Daily Mail says something is black then I know it must be white). It was fantastic.
The moral - never believe the newspapers

Yes, it is, most people think that all those who believe in some kind of god or all religious people are Christians, but this is not so.
A Christian is someone who has decided at some point to follow Jesus Christ, by having a genuine repentance of wrong doing, and then living their lives and having a living relationship God, through Jesus Christ. Its called - "born again" which does not mean they can enter their mother's womb and be born again of flesh, of course, but being born by the Spirit of God! God's Spirit indwells all who come to Him in faith, believing that He is, and being a diligent seeker of Him.

Unfortunately, Christians themselves. No one cares what we do, but when we make a mistake, everyone's on it like flies on honey. The media doesn't help matters. But it is Christians that Satan targets, not the lost. He doesn't have to worry about them. He spends his time making sure there is ample reason to ridicule God's people. "Your adversary, the devil, is like a roaring lion, roaming to and fro, seeking whom he may devour."

Jesus said that the world that hated Him, would hate His followers also. The world does not understand what real chrisitianty is. Its NOT the visable church, in all of its fragmented disunity and donominations. Its the INVISIBLE Church, Consisting of all of those people who have truly repented of their sins, and accepted Him into their Heart. And are trying to follow His Word. Most of the "visible" church IS corrupt and apostate. Jesus KNOWS who are His....theTravman
